FROM RUBIN’S VASE TO SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

The human brain is a master constructor, constantly working to create a coherent understanding of the world around us. Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin beautifully demonstrated this with his famous “Rubin’s vase”. This ingenious two-dimensional image is a classic example of a reversible figure, an optical illusion where your perception flips between two distinct interpretations: either a single elegant vase or the profiles of two faces gazing at each other. It’s a powerful illustration of how our minds actively interpret sensory input, rather than passively receiving it.

Just as our minds can switch between seeing a vase and faces, our fundamental perception of ourselves and the world can undergo a profound transformation in an instant. In our “normal” mode of perception, we typically experience ourselves as solid, physical bodies, and the world appears substantial, enduring, and largely unchangeable. However, there’s another way of seeing, a profound shift where we recognize ourselves as eternal beings and perceive the world as transient and dream-like, far less substantial than we once believed.

While spiritual teachers can guide us toward the truth of our real nature, true understanding goes beyond intellectual knowledge. To truly transform our personality and fully embrace this grand revelation, we must directly experience the reality of this truth. It’s not enough to be told; we must see and feel it for ourselves.

One of the significant texts in Vedantic literature that serves as a guide for this journey is the Aparokṣānubhūti, which translates from Sanskrit as “direct perception.” Though traditionally attributed to the great philosopher Adi Shankara, many modern scholars believe it was composed later, between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries. Regardless of its exact authorship, the Aparokṣānubhūti acts as a step-by-step manual, meticulously guiding students toward the awakening of their true, inherent nature. It’s a profound exploration of how to achieve that direct perception and unlock a completely new way of experiencing existence.
