OUR TROUBLED PLANET

Our current era is fraught with challenges, encompassing not only the devastation of war and conflict but also the profound disruptions to our planet caused by human-induced climate change. These planetary convulsions will affect us all to varying degrees, but for many, life will feel like a chaotic roller-coaster, lurching from one crisis to another.

While the link between warming oceans and intensified hurricanes is widely understood, climate change also has the potential to trigger an increase in both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The melting of glaciers leads to water infiltrating fissures in the Earth’s crust, causing expansion and weakening, which in turn contributes to a greater frequency of earthquakes.

Similarly, climate change can increase the likelihood of volcanic eruptions by augmenting the volume of magma within the Earth’s mantle.

Furthermore, a confluence of factors is contributing to a decline in arable farmland. Given this trend and the continued growth of the global population, the question of whether we can effectively mitigate the risk of widespread starvation remains a critical concern.

In the concluding chapter of my book Causing the Wisdom to Flow, I reflected on the precarious state of our beloved Mother Gaia, and as I grappled with this subject, I found myself wondering if humanity possessed the capacity to alter its seemingly downward spiral. It is easy to succumb to pessimism, particularly given the apparent indifference of so many.

However, while contemplating these weighty questions, I experienced a hopeful vision of interconnected lights spanning the globe. This vision communicated a sense of underlying optimism, suggesting that assistance will emerge from numerous individual souls and manifest in a multitude of ways.

Although these positive forces may not be readily apparent now, significant transformations will unfold over time. The planet will likely support a smaller population, and life will undergo substantial changes in various aspects. Ultimately, a greater collective awareness of the intrinsic value of human life and the imperative to overcome greed will likely take root.

Spiritual values will likely experience a powerful resurgence. However, the path to this renewed awareness may well involve a period of suffering, as it is often through hardship that we begin to truly acknowledge the need for fundamental change in our ways.

Our Planet

“UNLESS YOU CHANGE AND BECOME LIKE CHILDREN…”

What profound insight did Jesus offer when he said that we must become like little children to gain entry into the kingdom of heaven?

Children, nurtured in environments of love and support, possess an inherent guilelessness. They exhibit a deep-seated trust and a confident expectation of their parents’ provision. Their hearts and minds are typically unburdened by the heavy weights of addictions, hatreds, resentments, and negative feelings.

In the same way, the spiritual seeker who cultivates not only a deep love for the Divine but also an unwavering trust in God’s guidance will find true progress. The Indian sage Ramakrishna eloquently conveyed this through the story of the young monkey and the kitten. The baby monkey clings to its mother with significant effort, while the kitten simply cries out for its mother, who then lovingly carries it with ease, placing it in various safe spots. The kitten’s reliance on its mother is complete. The underlying wisdom is that the aspirant who loves and surrenders to God’s care is on a more direct and effortless path than one driven by sheer will and striving.

What, then, constitutes this “kingdom of heaven”? It is not a tangible place to be entered but rather a transformative state of consciousness that we can attain and experience within the context of our present lives.

In the Gospel of Thomas (verse 113), Jesus illuminates this further:

“It will not come while people watch for it; they will not say: Look, here it is, or: Look, there it is; but the kingdom of the father is spread out over the earth, and men do not see it.”

It is both immanent and transcendent. It permeates all of existence. However, until our spiritual perception is awakened, we remain blind to its presence. It is not perceived through the limitations of our physical eyes but through the expansive capacity of our intuitive knowing and our energetic awareness. When these inner senses are awakened, our lives undergo a complete and profound transformation.

YOUR PRECIOUS HUMAN LIFE

The immense value of this human life is sadly lost on many, and it is heartbreaking when individuals reach a point of wanting to cast it aside.

Suffering is an integral aspect of the human experience, a universal constant. It is vital to remember that these very hardships and challenges are the crucibles of our growth. The fundamental question is whether we can maintain a loving presence amidst it all.

When the burden of suffering feels heavy, we must ground ourselves in the awareness of our true nature – eternal and pure spirit – and remember that our time in this physical realm, however long it may feel, is ultimately finite.

Our inner guidance should be resolutely directed towards God/Source and the unique purpose that calls to us. We are engaged in a transformative journey, learning to alchemize negative emotions into the radiant energy of love, and to cultivate essential virtues such as unwavering trust, deep gratitude for our inherent gifts, a profound sense of contentment, and titiksha – the patient and courageous endurance of suffering.

In my short book about Rama and the Ramayana, I share the moving story of Shabari. This devoted elderly woman yearned for the darshan (divine visitation) of Rama, the embodiment of the Divine, in her humble hermitage. With steadfast devotion, she gathered berries, meticulously tasting each to ensure its sweetness for his offering, and in time, her heartfelt longing was answered by Rama’s blessed arrival.

This beautiful narrative serves as a powerful symbol of the soul’s diligent cultivation of spiritual virtues, preparing to receive divine grace and blessings not only in the afterlife but within the context of our earthly existence.

When life’s challenges feel insurmountable, we must reconnect with our core identity and the purpose that animates us, knowing that perseverance will be rewarded with the profound blessings of wisdom and enduring joy, even as we continue to live in our human embodiment.

ENLIGHTENMENT IS FOR EVERYONE

We often picture enlightenment and liberation as the sole pursuit of lifelong meditators in remote caves, an almost unattainable ideal. This begs the question: why even try?

The liberating truth: these profound goals are for everyone! Ultimate realization might not occur in this lifetime, but it’s undeniably our destiny. If so, why not begin the journey with intention now?

Swami Vivekananda, who introduced India’s transformative wisdom to the West in 1893, urged us:

“If there is sincerity of spirit, I tell you for a certainty you will attain it [enlightenment] in this very life. …’Whatever obstacles may come, I shall certainly overcome them’ – a firm determination like this is [needed]….When you have got the human body, then rouse the Atman (Self) within and say ‘I have reached the state of fearlessness!’ Say ‘I am the Atman (Self) in which my lower ego has become merged forever. Be perfect in this idea; and then as long as the body endures, speak unto others this message of fearlessness: ‘Thou are That,’ ‘Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached!”

CHANNELING?

A healthy skepticism is not only reasonable but necessary when encountering claims of channeling archangels, ascended masters, and other spiritual figures. The spectrum includes both authentic transmissions and deliberate deceptions, demanding careful discernment, a skill essential when choosing any spiritual teacher or guru.

The hallmark of a genuine channeled message is its power to liberate, not to create dependence. It should foster a deeper sense of calm, expanded tolerance, and a greater capacity for love within us. Ultimately, it should resonate with profound joy in our hearts, carrying the unmistakable signature of truth.

The truth, often overlooked, is that channeling is not a rare phenomenon; we all engage in it in various forms.

Consider energetic healers: they are not the sole source of the healing; rather, they act as conduits for a healing energy that flows through them from a greater source.

Similarly, the brilliant insights of inventors and visionaries like Albert Einstein, while seemingly born of individual genius, often tap into ideas already present on subtle energetic planes, potentially facilitated by spirit guides or other benevolent influences. While Einstein’s intellect was undeniably exceptional, his moments of profound realization likely involved spiritual prompting.

Every day, we are all recipients of guidance from our spirit guides and, at times, other benevolent spiritual beings, constantly connected to expansive energetic realms and other dimensions. As we quiet the internal noise of our racing thoughts, we naturally become more attuned to these subtle communications. Truth will emerge with increasing clarity, and our doubts will naturally fade away.

We should cultivate a deep gratitude for the helpful insights that grace our minds and humbly relinquish the egoic belief that every good thought originates solely from our own conscious intellect.
