Historically, humanity has assumed dominance over the Earth, but of course we are simply one species among many, and should accord appropriate respect and caring for Earth’s diverse life forms. However, for multiple reasons our impact has been devastating. Scientists now mark the 1950s as the beginning of a new era in planetary history, the Anthropocene, highlighted by widespread species loss due to habitat destruction and pollution.
Spiritual growth fosters an understanding that divine consciousness permeates all living beings—plants, animals, and humans alike. Accordingly, there is healing on many levels that happens as we enter a natural space. Scientists have shown that even just having a plant in the house can reduce stress hormones in the body. It has even been documented that hospital patients who just have a view of trees or other plants heal more quickly!
We often overlook the healing properties of the plants we consume, which not only nourish us but also offer medicinal benefits.
Acknowledging our deep connection to the natural world, we should prioritize daily interaction with it, whether in a city park or wilderness space. Let us remember the privilege of inhabiting this blessed planet and do what we can to preserve it for our children and grandchildren.
