NATURE IS NOT OPTIONAL
The human species has traditionally thought itself as having unqualified dominion over the earth, but the truth is that we are only one of many species occupying this planet and should accord respect and admiration for the earth’s amazing and diverse life forms. Scientists are now saying that in the 1950s we entered a new epoch in the history of the planet, called the Anthropocene, marking a time when our impact on the planet accelerated. Sadly, one of the most acute effects has been species loss, resulting from loss of habitat, chemicals and other human causes.
As we grow spiritually we realize that divine consciousness flows through plants and animals just as it does through humans. Accordingly, there is healing on many levels that happens as we enter a natural space. Scientists have shown that even just having a plant in the house can reduce stress hormones in the body. It has even been documented that hospital patients who just have a view of trees or other plants heal more quickly!
We take it for granted, but we know that the plants that we eat not only nourish us but have many healing qualities.
Mindful of our connection to the natural world and of its great importance, we should try to spend some time in the natural world every day, whether it be a city park or wilderness, and remember how lucky we are to live on this blessed planet that we call home.
